The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the proton - proton collider to be installed in a tunnel of approximately 27 km in circumference at CERN. It is characterised by the large - scale use of superconducting magnets providing a field of up to 9 tesla. The magnets will be cooled by superfluid helium. Their function is to maintain protons in orbit at nominal energies of 7000 GeV.
